 Background and Objective: Batching plant operators in concrete production facilities play a vital role in the manufacturing process. Their tasks require applying a significant level of cognitive skills. This study aimed to explain the working conditions of batching plant operators using Applied Cognitive Task Analysis.
Material & Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in 2025 at a concrete production plant in Guilan Province, Iran. The participants were 10 batching plant operators. Data were collected using Hierarchical Task Analysis and Applied Cognitive Task Analysis—involving three stages of individual semi-structured interviews. The data from the interviews were analyzed using conventional content analysis. The cognitive demands table for batching plant operator’s job was developed.
Results: The main tasks of the batching plant operators included preparation, concrete production, and work finalization. The main cognitive challenges for the operators included working with the control panel, diagnosing possible system malfunctions, achieving a specific quality and consistency of concrete, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, continuing work during sudden system failure, facing sudden changes in the production schedule, and making judgments about special types of concrete. The main cognitive strategies for coping with these challenges included maintaining composure, referring to instructions, seeking help from colleagues, and pursuing workstation variables for decision-making.
Conclusion: Batching plant operators have complex cognitive tasks. The use of Applied Cognitive Task Analysis can be effective in identifying difficult tasks, necessary actions, probable errors, and cognitive strategies for addressing occupational challenges, and can play an effective role in the ergonomic redesign of workstations.
