Background: Noise pollution is one of the most critical occupational hazards. One potential consequence of long-term noise exposure is alterations in endocrine function, particularly thyroid hormones. This study aimed to examine the trends of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels among ceramic and tile industry workers over a five-year period and its association with chronic noise exposure.
Methods: This historical cohort study was conducted from 2016 to 2021 in a ceramic and tile plant. The participants included 100 workers from high-noise departments (exposure group) and 100 workers from departments with noise levels below the permissible limits (control group). Demographic data and TSH levels were extracted and recorded from medical records. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests and repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS version 24.
Findings: The mean TSH levels in the baseline year (2016) were 2.93 ± 1.53 and 2.89 ± 1.36 in the exposure and control groups, respectively. Throughout the study period, changes in this hormone followed an irregular pattern in both groups, reaching 3.14 ± 1.59 and 3.10 ± 1.35 in 2021, respectively. Results from the independent t-test and repeated measures ANOVA indicated no significant difference in TSH changes between the two groups over time.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, chronic exposure to noise levels exceeding permissible limits did not have a significant impact on TSH level variations among ceramic and tile industry workers. Nevertheless, further studies with more comprehensive designs and the evaluation of multiple hormonal markers are recommended.
