Introduction: The necessity of risk management in construction projects in order to reduce accidents, achievement of the project goals, guaranteeing the survival of the organization and satisfying customers is inevitable. Therefore, attention to the risk management issue as apart of the risk macro topic in PMBOK can also play a significant role in identifying, assessing and controlling the HSE risks.
Method: This study was designed and implemented in a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study in 2016-2017 with the aim of analyzing 38 types of risk in four categories of HSE risk in a major macroeconomic project with the PMBOK standard approach. Basis of this combined risk assessment was determined the risk matrix including probability and severity factors.
Results: The results showed that the HSE risk associated with the cost of construction projects was at a very high-risk level among the four groups of HSE risks in the WBS, project cost, quality and emergency conditions. Furthermore, the lack of allocation of costs to employment HSE supervisor, expert and officer according to project phases was assessed as the highest risk source.
Conclusion: This study, with the evolution of approaching the project managers and HSE, providing a new approach to identifying major project risks, examining the different dimensions of the consequences of accidents in the project, and applying different areas of PMBOK standard in risk assessment, can be introduced as a suitable substitute for common risk assessment methods in this industry and similar industries.
